Data Privacy -- Background as the Federal Debate Takes Shape
The call for a federal approach comes on the heels of California's passage of California Consumer Protection Act
(CCPA) - an internet data privacy bill modeled largely upon the European Union's (EU) General Data Protection
Regulation (GDPR), which standardizes the laws for protecting consumer data in all 28 EU-member countries.

         How Congress Works
The legislative branch of our government, Congress, is a bi-cameral body of both the Senate and the House of
         Representatives.

The legislative branch is the joint power and responsibility of the House and the Senate to appropriate funds and make
law by agreement of both. The House and the Senate must pass bills with the same language to send to the President
to sign into law. These are in each Congressional session, typically divided into two sessions, one each year, although
an emergency may require a third session.
