Hey! My name is Dyson / Ryan. I am an artist from
Birmingham and my work is about my personal
experience of queerness in a heteronormative
world. As I see queerness to be abject to our
hetero-dominated society, I usually present it as a
critique of such. Embracing imperfect, honest
sexiness, bright pink and tinfoil. Expressing my
thoughts and feelings along my journey to Plutopia
– A kind of kinky, all-loving heaven I have devised.
This piece titled ‘EINS’, slightly removed from
the Plutopian narrative I usually play with, is the
first of a series of images I produced as an
extension to Hal Fischer’s work on gay semiotics
from the 1970s. I highly recommend reading
though his book! He helped to popularise the
hankey code. This series of work is accompanied
with an essay exploring the cultural and political
context in which Fischer lived and how it affected
his work. The essay can be found on my website
ryanasbury.co.uk.
