               Problem:  Your  rope  has  a  length  of  worn  section  in  the  middle.  Eventually,
               you’ll get around to splicing it, but for now, it will have to be used as is. The
               solution is the sheepshank—an ancient knot used by sailors to shorten rope that’s
               too long for the job at hand.

               The  sheepshank  holds  only  when  there  is  tension  at  each  end;  even  then,  it
