Our Philosophy
of Early Childhood Education
The early childhood program at Divine Savior Academy is founded on research-based, developmentally-appropriate practices. This means that all aspects of the program are age-appropriate, culturally-appropriate, and individually- appropriate.
We are all unique.
In order for optimal growth to take place, children must engage in learning experiences that match who they are as individuals as well as their current stage of development. Each child is unique and is guided through the educational journey in a way that meets his or her personal needs. Instruction is tailored to support each child as they climb the ladder of development.
We participate in our learning.
If you were to step into an early childhood classroom at DSA, you would encounter an active learning environment. You would see children happily interacting with the materials available to them, while their teachers provide the support needed to extend their learning. You would hear children and teachers discussing their observations and plans for what they will do next.
During the early childhood years, children learn best when they are allowed to observe, explore, and experiment with their environment. Teachers intentionally plan learning experiences that allow children to actively participate,
using multiple senses whenever possible. They provide the materials, environment, and support that children need in order to continue their developmental growth. These active learning experiences help children to form the foundation of their math, science, and literacy knowledge.
We learn through play.
At first glance, one might view children’s play scenarios
as simply “fun” activities for children to engage in before they must begin the rigorous lessons of elementary school. However, at Divine Savior Academy, we view young children’s play as their work. Our philosophy of early childhood education aligns with the vast research which states that children’s play is critical to their development.
Children’s play scenarios provide the vehicle through which children implement, practice, and extend their learning. Play is the best setting that teachers can use to observe children’s current development and provide the individual guidance and interaction needed to extend their learning. The play that we encourage in our classrooms is mature, purposeful play. This means that our teachers intentionally create a play- based learning routine that encourages children’s interactions with one another and fosters critical-thinking and problem- solving skills. These are essential life skills that will benefit children throughout their lives.
