BACKGROUND
Prior to the advent of
computer aided design
(CAD), drawings for
woven textile pattern were
translated by craftsmen onto
special graph paper called
point papers. These detailed
binary weave code drawings
were then read by textile
technicians, who cut the
weaving instruction cards
that were to be placed onto
the looms.
OUR ARCHIVE
The Point Paper Art
Company utilizes an archive
collected over the last
30 years by fabric weaver
Richard M R Smith.
The archive is also a great
resource to the furnishing
industry looking for
‘new’ styles of design or
constructions of fabric.
As well as an historical style
library from around Europe,
the archive is also preserving
an important part of the
North of England’s industrial
