At the 70th International Convention in 1987 held in Taipei, the
International Board passed a resolution to accept women as Lions
members. In May 1991, the Vancouver Pacific Lions Club was
chartered. The Vancouver Pacific Lions Club is an all women’s club
and it is the desire of all the members to preserve the essence.
The Club’s primary goal is to concentrate on the welfare of seniors, women and children. Over the
past 30 years of service, we serve Chinese Dim Sum to the seniors monthly at St. Vincent’s
Hospital Langara Extended Care Home.
Since our charter, we have been actively involved in organizing annual fund raising events.
We also participate in the Gaming Commission of the Province, volunteering in Casino duties in the
earlier years, then Bingo duties in recent years. Proceeds from the Gaming Commission are
donated to various British Columbia charities.
Throughout the last 30 years, we have collectively raised over one million dollars which we have
donated to many charities.
In 2004, we established a Housing Foundation and actively looked for a suitable senior housing
project. We were extremely proud to accomplish our goal in 2010. The transfer of “Golden Age
Court” was finally completed in November, 2010. 2010 proved to be an exceptional year. We
partnered with Vancouver Mandarin Lions Club to refurbish the Queen Elizabeth Lions Clock. The
Lions Clock is a landmark in Queen Elizabeth Park.
Members of Vancouver Pacific Lions Club practiced the First Objective of Lionism: “To create and
foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the world”. Balancing life among career,
family, bringing up children and volunteering, we are able to extend fellowship internationally and
twin with clubs overseas.
In 2018, the Club sponsored Metro Vancouver Leo Club, a youth program supported by Lions
Clubs International in which LEOS stands for LEADERSHIP, EXPERIENCE, OPPORTUNITY, and
SERVICE. It is an Omega Leo Club with 20 members who are mostly University students (from age
19-30). As the youngest members of Lions Clubs International, Leos embody the best qualities of
our incredible organization. They are devoted young people who realize the power of action.
Together, Leos and Lions form a powerful partnership—one of mutual respect, where Lions learn
from the innovative insights of Leos, and where Leos gain access to the proven strategies of those
who’ve successfully served the world for decades.
Through this first ever Joint Fundraising Project - Virtual Charity Sale, Vancouver Pacific Lions Club
plans to support our Golden Age Court , a subsidized housing project with 71 units of studio and
one-bedroom apartments for low income seniors over the age over 55. This project for seniors is
located in the Downtown Eastside at 145 East Cordova Street, Vancouver. Golden Age Court was
built in 1985 and now it is the asset of Vancouver Pacific Housing Society. With the age of the
building, we need a long term plan to maintain the building in good shape so that the seniors can
have a comfortable home with quality living. As Lions and Leos, our motto is “WE SERVE” and we
hope that through our effort, we can make the betterment of our communities no matter it is big or
small.
