well preserved, along with marine plant remains, fragments of coal and resin, seeds, and pieces of leather. The seeds included peppercorns, pre- sumably spillage from the cargo on the Kenne- merland’s first return voyage of 1663. Also trapped within this matte were a number of
sea creatures, especially sea-urchins, at least one of which still contained all its meat, suggesting that this deposit formed very rapidly. At the very least, this level seemed to indicate an un- disturbed 17th-century horizon; it also presents several problems and ideas, some of which are
