Explanatory note 1602-10:
The data for 1602-03 concern the shipment of currency with the fleet of 'Fourteen ships': according to V an Dam reals were then purchased at 46, 46V4, 46^2, 46^/4, and 47 stuiver each, for the total sum of fl 818,786.17. This fleet also carried rosenobels, purchased at fl 8.25. According to the resolutions the reals for 1603-04 were purchased at 47 stuiver apiece. The rest of the data are in reals only, which in the table have been converted at a rate of 47 stuiver or fl 2.35.
Explanatory note 1610-1620:
The resolutions and letters give the amounts in reals; these have been converted in the table at a rate of 48 stuiver and from 1619-20 at 50 stuiver - the increase in value of the real is shown in the sources. The resolutions are sometimes vague and have been supplemented with data from the directors' letters to Bantam and from the statements of moneys received in the reports sent home by J. P. Coen. In general the amounts given here are therefore higher than the figures mentioned in the resolution. The gold sent in 1615-16 relates to 1800 rosenobels, reckoned at fl 8.25 each. The sum of fl 48,000 in gold dispatched in 1618-19 (to Coromandel) is an estimate based on the res. Heren 17 oi Sep. 1618, and on Colenbrander, Jan Pietersz. Coen IV, 409,414. The payement sent in 1617/18 is made up of double and single stuivers.
