Williams & Humbert’s history started in 1877, when two intrepid Englishmen started crafting
sherry in Jerez de la Frontera. The winery is located in the geographical triangle formed by the
cities of Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar de Barrameda. This
triangle has a unique microclimate owing to the influences of the Guadalquivir and
Guadalete. Today, the company is owned by the Medina family who are local to Jerez. A key
player in the founding of the Sherry D.O., the bodega owns 300 hectares of vineyards, many
in the Balbaina pago, which produces particularly complex and delicate wines. Williams &
Humbert produces a highly regarded international range of Sherries but has also gained a
stellar reputation for their aged wines, in particular the Solera Especial and the W&H
Collection ranges.
Paola Mendina is the second generation
of the Medina family which owns Williams
& Humbert. Born in Sevilla in 1978, she
grew up in Jerez and studied chemistry,
viticulture and oenology at university in
Cadiz and Madrid. In her opinion few wines
are able to bring passion to an oenologist as
much as sherry does, with its variation and
particular production process. She has
been working at Williams & Humbert since
2010 after working for Bodega 14 Viñas.
