Another homegrown band, Blackber- ry Winter, and its members have appeared together and individually on the stage. at band provided the soundtrack to the 2010 blockbuster lm “Winter’s Bone.”
While the music is a big draw and the heart of the festival’s origins, the Old-Time Music, Ozark Heritage Festival has evolved over the years into a much more encompassing celebration of local traditions.
“ ere is so much more to the weekend activities, and we feel that’s what makes our festival so di erent,” said Paula Speraneo, member of the arts council and one of the event’s organizers.
“We feature musical workshops and pickin’ circles for our guests,” she continued. “ ere is a children’s activity area featuring games from days gone by.”
e Kids Fest was added to the roster
in the festival’s 20th year and o ers such unique activities as the water bucket brigade, in which the little ones line up and pass a bucket of water along, much as re brigades did in years past.
e mule jump spectacle is said to have developed when raccoon hunters began training mules to jump over fences so that they did not have to interrupt the hunt to locate a gate. It became a competitive event unto itself and contests began to take place at county fairs and town picnics through much of the rural Southeast and Midwest, especially Missouri. Indeed, according to festival organizers, Mis- souri appears to host the most such competitions. e Old-Time Music, Ozark Heritage Festival celebrated 10 years of mule jumping competitions in 2017.
