traditional Ozarks square dancing, basket weaving, yarn spinners and weavers, quilting in action and on display, primitive campsites, ri e-mak- ing, blacksmiths, wood-carving, int- knapping, pottery, soap-making, antique iron machines, Native American cra s and the largest “bed turning” in the area.
Bed turning, for the uninitiated, is the art of storytelling as it pertains to handmade quilts, in which a captive audience is presented with a quilt and told its origins and history.
e festival has always boasted traditional Ozarks food, such as corn- bread and cat sh, and in its 10th year, a cooking stage was added to more easily showcase local victuals. e stage, with its rows of benches, is reminiscent of an old-time meeting- or prayer-house, and it is here interactive outdoor cooking lessons are o ered both days. Highlights have included the festival’s “signature dish,” squirrel pot pie, and Dutch oven
cooking presentations. A er each session, the food is available for sampling – and it’s all free.
e West Plains Council on the Arts has been supported from the very beginning in its e orts to put on the festival by the Missouri Arts Council, and the Missouri Folk Arts Program has been instrumental in fostering local musical connections, said organizers.
Today the festival is produced through a partnership between West Plains and Missouri arts councils, Missouri State University-West Plains, the city of West Plains, the West Plains Civic Center and the Ozark Heritage Welcome Center.
Festival updates and artists news highlights are given year-round on a Facebook page specially created by West Plains Council on the Arts for the purpose. Follow @Old.Time.Music. Festival on Facebook to see those updates, or visit the festival’s website, oldtimemusic.org.
