Jeanne Fifield Apple Valley, Minnesota
As a farm girl growing up in southwestern Minnesota, Jeanne has always enjoyed digging in the
dirt. Visitors frequently say; “Wow, this must be so much work.” Her reply is always, “No, it is fun
and great therapy.” When they purchased the property, the yard was all weeds and dead grass
after a terrible drought in the summer of ’88. There were no hostas, no flowers, but there were three
beautiful oaks, which still stand, providing the perfect backdrop for her beloved hostas and quirky
art. As one wanders from Jeannine’s garden, next door you cross over a covered patio and enjoy
the view from the “path to nowhere.” Beyond the arbor is another neighbor’s pollinator and butterfly
garden. In July, it bursts with color, hummingbirds, and butterflies!
Jeanne’s garden playground is forever changing, but a few things remain steady. She is forever
grateful to live next door to Jeannine, a dear friend and gardening mentor. Many summer evenings
they share a glass of wine, discuss their gardening addiction, and solve the world’s problems.
