Wanda's Story


























     Wanda Yvette Dockens, affectionately known to her family as “Pookie”, was born on October 5, 1969 in Shelby,
     Mississippi to Susan Dockens. She lived with her aunt and uncle, Patsy and Robert Williams who served as her
     guardian until she went off to college. Wanda attended school both in the Chicago and Oak Park public schools,
     graduating from Oak Park River Forest High School in 1987. From there she went off to study at Illinois State
     University in Normal, Illinois but transferred to Clark Atlanta University (CAU), where she attained her Bachelor of
     Arts in Accounting as well her master’s degree in Information Studies.

     Wanda worked as a Librarian for the DeKalb County School System for many years before leaving to work in the
     private sector. She held several roles in the field of Quality Assurance Engineer with several companies over the
     years. At the time of her death, she was employed by NCR Corporation as a Quality Engineer.

     Wanda took every opportunity to enjoy life to the fullest.  In the fall of 1991, while studying on the campus of CAU,
     Wanda was initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® Alpha Pi Chapter. Wanda had always talked about
     becoming a member and was influenced by Monica Martinez, her dearest cousin and soror. Wanda continued her
     love for the organization even after college and became a member of the graduate chapter, Kappa Omega Chapter.
     Wanda loved sports and was a high school athlete. She excelled at basketball and cheerleading, but her greatest
     love was tennis. She was an avid tennis player and loved watching Venus and Serena Williams play both live and on
     television.  She enjoyed traveling to watch tennis matches or vacationing at interesting sites and experiencing new
     places around the world.  She faithfully attended the U.S. Openings with her fellow tennis club members.

     Wanda was devoted to her family. She committed her time and generosity to family. She passionately celebrated
     important events and moments such as holidays, birthdays, graduations, various achievements and family
     reunions.  Wanda will be forever known for her vibrant personality that would often energize any room.  Her life will
     be missed and our memories her will forever be cherished in our minds and hearts.

     As deep as her love for life, so was her love for God. She was baptized into Christ at the Monroe Street Church of
     Christ as a young teen.  Faithfully,Wanda enjoyed worshipping and praising God. She enjoyed singing and being in
     fellowship with her church family. Wanda continued in love and faithful service, attending Renaissance Church of
     Christ in Atlanta, GA until her untimely death. After a brief illness, Wanda departed this life on October 12, 2020 at
     3:03 pm in the care of the Northside Medical Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. At Wanda’s departure, she was
     surrounded by family members at her bedside and more than 26 family members were on a virtual Zoom call
     singing and worshiping God.

     Wanda leaves to mourn her mother, Susan Olufotebi (Joseph); brother, Corey Coleman; sister, Erica Dockens; her
     aunt and uncle, Patsy and Robert Williams; cousins, Jangre´ Williams, Beverly Williams and Stephanie Mack, whom
     she was raised with, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended relatives, sorority sisters, tennis club
     members, church family and friends.
