Morehouse School of Medicine
(MSM) was founded in 1975 during
the tenure of president, Hugh M. MSM RANKED
Gloster, PhD, and dean, Louis
W. Sullivan, MD, as the Medical #1
Education Program at Morehouse
College before becoming an IN SOCIAL MISSION
independently chartered institution in Nation’s top medical
1981. MSM is the first predominantly school in fulfilling
black medical institution established in the 20th century. its social mission
Morehouse School of Medicine exists to improve the health and
well-being of individuals and communities; increase the diversity of
the health professional and scientific workforce; and address primary
health care needs through programs in education, research, and service
with emphasis on people of color and the underserved urban and rural
populations in Georgia, the nation, and the world.
MSM awards degrees in Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of
Philosophy in Biomedical Sciences (PhD), Master of Public Health 300+
(MPH), Master of Science in Medical Sciences (MSMS), Master of COMMUNITIES served
Science in Biomedical Research (MSBR), Master of Science in Clinical by MSM initiatives
Research (MSCR), Master of Science in Biomedical Technology (MSBT),
and Master of Science in Neuroscience (MSNS). MSM also has seven and programs
residency programs: Family Medicine, Preventive Medicine, Internal
Medicine, Psychiatry, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Pediatrics.
For more than 40 years, Morehouse School of Medicine has been
identifying, nurturing, and guiding students of unusual ability to become
the next generation of healthcare leaders with a commitment to serving
the underserved. We are producing doctors and healthcare professionals
who are not just supremely capable, but also curious, compassionate, and MSM ALUMNI
community-focused—the kind of culturally competent practitioners the Giving Rate Ranks

This effort has not gone unnoticed; in recent years, MSM has twice
been nationally recognized as the top medical school in the country for Among all US
its dedication to the social mission of healthcare education. The Beyond Medical Schools
Flexner Alliance awarded MSM the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation Award
for Institutional Excellence in Social Mission. This recognition followed
a study in the Annals of Internal Medicine, which ranked MSM as the
number-one medical school in the nation in fulfilling its social mission, a
role emphasized as critical to improving the country’s overall health.
