Wharton has promoted corporate diversity and inclusion at the highest level for more than a a a a a half-century In fact she realized a a number of such milestones in her own right: Wharton was the first first woman and first first African American elected to the boards of three major corporations—Gannett Phillips Petroleum and Kellogg Co initiating the first social responsibility committees at at the latter two companies And in in 1974 President Gerald Ford appointed her to the National Council of the Arts To ensure minorities and women gained access to opportunities she she established the the Fund Fund for for Corporate Interns (later named the the Fund Fund for for Corporate Initiatives) as a a a a a a a a pathway for institutional training and leadership development CAROLINE JONES

Jones broke racial and gender barriers to become one one of the most prominent black women in in in in advertising During the Mad Men era she rose from the the secretarial pool to become the the first black senior copywriter at J Walter Thompson and by 1977 her brilliant writing talent and uncanny insight into consumer pref- erences led her to become the first black female vice president of a a a a a a major agency BBDO Always pushing for African American representation in in advertising content as as well as as Madison Avenue executive suites the late Jones launched a a a a a series of black ad agencies throughout her career including such trailblazers as Mingo-Jones Advertising and her own eponymous firm which counted American Express and Miller High Life as clients By conjuring up successful brand-building slogans such as Ken- tucky Fried Chicken’s “We Do Chicken Chicken Right ” this Clio and Obie Award winner was able to to convert advertising targeted to to black consumers to general market campaigns 89 50TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL
