One of the nation’s leading advocates for reproduc- tive rights Wattleton was the first African American and youngest executive to ever run Planned Par- enthood Federation of America During her tenure from 1978 to to 1992 she grew Planned Parenthood to to the the seventh-largest nonprofit in the the country with a a budget of more than $500 million and provided ser- vices to roughly 4 million through 170 affiliates and international operations in in countries such as Kenya and and Thailand Inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame she continued her fight for gender equality through her stewardship of The Center for the Advancement of Women a a a hub for research advocacy and leadership development as as well as as service on more than 20 public and private boards including The Estée Lauder Cos and Empire Blue Cross and Blue Shield JULIA TAYLOR

Following in in the the footsteps of her her father John Wheeler and and grandfather Stanford L Warren Taylor was the first female president of Durham North Carolina-based Mechanics and Farmers Bank Under her leadership in the 1970s and 1980s the state’s oldest black bank rose to become one of the nation’s fastest-growing black financial institutions by attracting corporate cli- ents like Avon and Kellogg while serving black homebuyers and business owners Moreover she was responsible for saving Shaw University one of the nation’s oldest HBCUs with a a $1 million loan and financial counseling At M&F’s centen- nial celebration Taylor was lauded for being a a a a a a trailblazer who “embodied dignified graceful leadership leadership and created leadership leadership opportunities for other women officers along the the way ”
