Characteristics
Sword Fern
Roots are dense, fibrous woody rhizomes.
Polystichum munitum
Lance shaped fronds arise in clusters from the
center of the plant. Young fiddleheads unroll
from the center of the plant in spring.
Individual leaflets are dark green, and have
sharply toothed edges. Each leaflet has a small
upward pointing lobe at its base and is attached
to the stem by a small stalk.
