Suction systems
The water available to patients and employees must be drinking-water quality.
Proceed as follows to prevent microbial contamination of water systems:
• Flush water system for at least 2 minutes at all outlets (including rinsing glass iller) without transmission instruments at the start of the working day.
• Flush all systems for at least 20 seconds after every patient.
• Flush all systems for at least 20 seconds at the end of the working day.
The suction system removes cooling water, spray, saliva and blood, and also solid substances such as dentine dust or illing materials from the patient’s oral cavity. The following measures are recommended to prevent infection.
Internal surfaces of the suction system including the suction hose:
• Flush a water-air mixture (min. 0.5 l cold water) through the system after every treatment in which the system was used.
• Remove and discard suction cannulas. • Discard the suction mouthpiece
Exterior surfaces:
• Disinfect ixed suction hoses outside and inside (where accessible) with wipes after every patient. • Prepare removable suction hoses as required.
• Disinfect basin with wipe.
Disinfection of the suction system:
• Preclean the system with a water-air mixture (min. 0.5 l cold water).
• Flush the system with a correctly prepared disinfectant solution
• Follow the manufacturer’s directions and wear protective clothing.
The suction system should be disinfected up to three times a day, depending on the degree of contamination.
Cleaning the suction system:
• Run correctly prepared cleaning solution through the suction hoses.
• Tip cleaning solution into the rinse basin. Rinse with plain water to remove dissolved contamination • (follow the manufacturer’s directions and wear protective clothing).
The suction system should be cleaned once or twice a week.
The manufacturer’s directions are followed. The relevant operating parameters are regularly checked against the manufacturer’s instructions. The manufacturer’s instructions are available.
