Special Dental Applications
Preparation of dental devices
If contaminated with bacteria, medical devices are a possible source of infection in humans. The operator needs to deine work instructions providing detailed descriptions of all individual tasks in writing. Individual givens at the facility must be considered in creating the work instructions. The work instructions need to deine the approach in detail while naming the aids required.
Impressions and dental workpieces
Special disinfectants are used to disinfect and clean dental workpieces and impressions, because impressions (e.g. alginates, hydrocolloids and polyethylene) may change dimensi- ons by absorbing or losing moisture. The disinfectant preparation must not afect the stability and cement compatibility of impressions and dental workpieces.
Cleaning and disinfection is performed immediately after removal from the patient’s mouth.
• Rinse materials cautiously and carefully, preferably under running tap water
(wear protective clothing). Avoid splashing as much as possible.
• Cleaning before disinfection is required, because otherwise the disinfectant may not
reach all areas because of the frequently large quantities of blood and saliva. In this case,
disinfection will not be efective.
• Immerse impression material, impression tray and dental workpieces in the disinfectant
solution so all parts are covered. Note the correct exposure time, particularly for alginates, hydrocolloids and polyethylene to prevent changes in dimension (swelling of the impression). Rinse all materials thoroughly with plain water after disinfection.
Follow the directions of the manufacturer of the materials.
