Dreams of the Future
Can some people tune into startling
depictions of future events in their
dreams? Several eminent personalities
have claimed to have the frightening
power, dreaming of the future exactly as
it subsequently occurred. And there are
those who claim to have used this same
ability for recreational and even
lucrative ends.
For ten consecutive nights, a 23-year-old office
manager in Cincinnati, Ohio, had a recurring
nightmare. In his dream he heard an aircraft’s
engines failing and then watched as a huge
three-engined American Airlines airplane
swerved sharply in the air, rolled over and
crashed to the ground. His dream premonition
was so real that he heard the terrible explosion
and felt the searing heat of the mass of red and
orange flames. Each night, David Booth woke
up in horror; the nightmare haunting him
throughout his waking hours. It was, he said,
unlike a dream. “It was like I was standing there Mary, and several friends about the troubling
watching the whole thing - like watching
television.
Dream turned to reality
He was so troubled by this experience that he
decided to take action. On Tuesday, May 22,
1979, he telephoned American Airlines, the
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) at the
Greater Cincinnati Airport, and a psychiatrist at Bishop Dr. Joseph Lanyi, former tutor of
the University of Cincinnati, Although they
treated his call sympathetically there was little bishop was at Grosswardein, Hungary, and the
they could do. Four days later, on the evening of Archduke 300 miles away at Sarajevo, in
May 29, 1979, an American Airlines DC-10
crashed as it took off from Chicago’s O’Hare
International Airport; 273 people died. At the
time, ti was the worst disaster in the U.S.A.’s
aviation history.
The FAA’s public affairs officer Jack
Barker described the dream premonition as
“uncanny,” adding: “There were differences,
but there were many similarities. The greatest
similarity was his calling [naming] the airline
and the sirplane…and that [it] came in
inverted.” He revealed that the FAA had made
every possible effort to match up the details of
David Booth’s nightmare with a known airport
or airplane but it was not until after the crash
actually happened that all the details fell into
place.
A preventable accident?
What would have happened if they could have
been able to identify the plane and airport?
Could David Booth’s premonition actually have
prevented the accident?
People usually have premonitions about
their own lives or of those near and dear to
them. One puzzling aspect of David Booth’s
dream of the DC-10 disaster is that he does not
appear to have had a connection with anyone
involved in the crash. Why did he glimpse those
particular moments in the future? No one can
answer for certain.
Assassination
President Abraham Lincoln had a vivid dream
on an April night in 1865. He dreamt that he was
awakened by sobbing and got up from his bed in
the White House and followed the sound. He
found himself in the East Room where people
were filing past a catafalque. Men and women
were paying their last respects to a figure lying between the Archduke and Lanyi - the Archduke
in state, guarded by soldiers. The face was
covered, so he asked one of the guards who had
died. “The President,” the soldier replied. “He
was killed by an assassin.” The group around
the catafalque gave out a loud cry of grief and
Lincoln awoke. The President told his wife,
dream. The same month the prophecy was
tragically fulfilled when the President was
assassinated at Ford’s Theatre by John Wilkes
Booth.
War crime
The political assassination that led to the First coffin, containing the body of this brother,
World War appeared in a dream recorded by
Archduke Frances Ferdinand of Austria. The
Bosnia-Hercegovina on June 28, 1914, when a
dreadful woke Lanyi at 3:15 a.m.. He dreamed
he had gone to his desk early in the morning and
found a black-bordered letter with a black seal
and the arms of the Archduke. He recognized
Francis Ferdinand’s writing and saw the top of
the letter a small blue picture, like a postcard
depicting the Archduke and his wife in a car,
accompanied by a general and an officer.
Crowds lined the street, waving and cheering.
Suddenly two young men leapt forward and
shot at the car.
In his dream Lanyi read the text of the
letter which said: “Dear Dr. Lanyi, Your
Excellency, I wish to inform you that my wife
and I were the victims of a political
assassination. We recommend ourselves to your
prayers. Cordial greetings from your Archduke
Franz, Sarajevo, June 28th, 3:15 a.m.” Lanyi
wrote down exactly what he had dreamed and
said Mass immediately for the couple. He told
his servant, his mother, and a guest what he had
dreamed. Confirmation that it was true came in
a telegram at 3:30 p.m.
But only one assassin was responsible
for the assassination - not two as Lanyi had
dreamed. This weakens the case for those who
have attributed this event to clairvoyance.
Discounting pure coincidence, of course, the
incident might be attributable to another form of
paranormal activity: telepathic exchange
may not have had time to see who was shooting
him.
Steamboat pilot
It is impossible to explain the experience of
Samuel Clemens - better known in later life as
the writer Mark Twain (1835 - 1910) - in terms
of telepathy. Before he became a writer he
worked as an apprentice pilot on the
Pennsylvania steamboat on the Mississippi
River, alongside is younger brother Henry, a
clerk. While visiting a sister in St. Louis, Sam
had a vivid dream in which he saw a metal
resting on two chairs. A bouquet of white
flowers, with a crimson one in the middle, had
been placed on his chest.
Following an argument with the chief
pilot of his boat a few days later, Sam was
transferred to another boat, the Lacey. Henry
stayed behind. When Sam’s boat reached
Greenville, Mississippi, he learned that the
Pennsylvania had blown up just outside
Memphis and 150 had perished. His brother
survived the blast but was badly scalded, and
Sam spent six days and nights with him until he
died.
When Sam went to pay his last respects,
the scene that greeted him was exactly how he
had seen with one exception. Henry was in a
metal coffin resting on two chairs, but there
were no flowers, Yet as Sam looked down on his
brother an elderly woman entered the room. She
placed a bouquet of white flowers, with a single
crimson one in the center, on Henry’s body, then
