“Well, say ! And I always thought it was Legs Diamond.”
“Well, now you know, see?”
“Now, Brown, indicate on the wall map the capital of Argentina.
“Okay.” Bang !
“Lousy shot, Brown. Taking the scale of that map at ten miles to
the inch you’ve missed the capital by about three miles.” Uproarious'
laughter from the class. Brown’s face reddens and then pales beneath
his freckles. He fans his gun.
“Brown!” rasps the teacher, “Put that rod away. How do you
expect to learn anything if I have to keep calling the riot squad so
often ? You’ll stay in after school for target practice.”
I suppose there would be sad moments in a tough school. The
vacant desk. The school bag hanging on its nail with its pitiful
collection of exercise books, marbles, spare ammunition, a couple of
detonators and a worn razor with four notches in the handle.
The teacher will point to the vacant desk and say “Well boys
Robinson passed for his Senior Examination. Good marks too Two
through the left lung and one slap between the eyes.
“This looks like a good opportunity for the anatomy class before
the bulls shift him off the slab.”
\ ou ve often heard it said you may even have said it yourself that
a schoolboy nowadays gets a wider education and more opportunities
than his father ever had. How true. How very true !
