Conscious Competence Stages of Learning
The stages of learning that a coach passes through are described in the Conscious Competence model. We pass from stage 1 of not knowing what we don’t know, to stage 2, where with the help of learning and practice we become aware of what we don’t know or don’t do well. Some coaches may start at stage 2 if they have significant experience maybe as a player or coach in another team sport. Over time and with experience and reflection, we may progress to stage 3 where we become more effective coaches and are aware of what we do well. If we stay in the game long enough and continue to improve we may hot stage 4 where we are not consciously aware of how effective we have become. Coaching has become natural.
