Page 5 - 15TH ROYAL-THOMIAN SOUVENIR_Neat
P. 5

The first encounter ended in a right Royal victory, in spite of a great effort by
the Thomians! Royal skipper Heshan de Silva won the toss and invited the
Thomians to bat first. The Thomians wasting no time, fired all their guns with
some power hitting by P Kathy (26 runs) and Lanka Lions cricketer Derrick
Jansen (21 runs), but Yasantha Peiris (2 for 11) and Manjula Premaratne
(2 for 16) put the brakes on their run spree.
Chasing the Thomian total of 98 for 9 in 20 overs, the Royalists had to achieve
a run rate of just underfive an over, which was difficult with the ferocious
Thomian bowlers. Royal openers Chinthaka Edirimanne 24 (2 fours & 2 sixes)
and Lasantha Dhanthanarayana (18) set the Royal foundation by
posting 46 for the first wicket. Later, Nurendra (5 fours and a six)put on a match
winning partnership of 43 with Manjula Premaratne (11) for Royal to achieve the
honour of winning the first encounter, with 5 overs to spare !

I thank all those who have put in so much hard work to make the 15th Encounter
a success and for also continuing the Roy-Tho tradition for the past 15 years.
I wish all of you present here today, a day full of fun, cricket and entertainment!
     Let’s play !!
