11. Procedure: Instruction Text
Objectives of the Unit
Upon completion of this unit, you are expected to be able to:
1. Understand an instruction text with the appropriate generic structure (orientation,
events, re-orientation);
2. Identify social functions, text structures, and language elements of instruction text and
how it should be used in context;
3. Write an instruction text by using appropriate generic structure and language features.
Prepare Before Reading
In this unit you will learn about instruction text. What is instruction? An instruction text
is a piece of nonfiction text that gives instructions on how to complete a task. Also, it called
an instructional text, or an instructive text. The text may include organizational devices.
Examples of instruction text can range from recipes to board game instructions or how to
complete a video game. In any of those cases, it is important to provide easy to follow
instructions which use simple language and provide information on what to do in
chronological order.
The generic structures of this text are; title (goal), materials/equipment, steps, and
closing. The language features of the instruction text are (1) Written in present tense. (2)
Imperative verbs “rinse wall” or “open the door”. (3) Time connectives (First, next, then,
finally, etc.) (4) Adverb (Slowly, immediately, etc.). Now, read the following example of an
instruction text on how to paint the walls.
