Established in 2011, the Buddhist Society at SMK Selandar served as a
meaningful platform for students to learn about Buddhist teachings and to cultivate
moral values. However, the society is no longer listed as part of the school’s co-
curricular activities for the year 2025. Its members have been reassigned to other
clubs without a proper explanation, causing confusion among students and their
parents.
On 8 April 2025 and 14 April 2025, the YBAM Melaka State Liaison Committee
and YBAM officially submitted a letter to the Director of the Melaka State Education
Department (Reference No: YBAMMLK_JPNMLK_20250408[1]) and the Minister
and Deputy Minister, of Education, respectively (Reference No: XXVI\HQS\A01\797)
to raise concern over this issue. Regrettably, no response has been received to date.
YBAM views this silence as worrying, especially considering the importance of
upholding freedom of religion and the right of students to participate in religious-
based co-curricular activities.
YBAM strongly urge the relevant authorities to reinstate the Buddhist Society
at SMK Selandar immediately. This act would reflect respect for religious diversity,
student rights, and harmony within the school community. YBAM hope this matter
will be resolved urgently in the interest of the students and the broader school
community.
