                  Maitreya  is  a  popular  figure  depicted



                  frequently in contemporary crafts as a



                  cheerful,  contented  monk  with  a  large



                  exposed  belly.  Traditions  related  him



                  as  a  Chinese  monk  called  Pu-tai



                  believed  to  be  the  reincarnation  of



                  Maitreya  and  due  to  his  benevolent



                  nature  and  protruding  stomach  led  to



                  being  called  the  Laughing/Smiling



                  Buddha.
