1885 年，由 Ven. Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala

Thera 带领的 Colombo Committee 在筹备卫塞

庆典过程中，就萌起设计佛旗的念头。委员会

希望佛旗能成为全球佛教的象征。

（根据 1980 年，Buddhist Theosophical
Society 百年纪念册的记载， Gunawardena 就

是佛旗的设计师。）
