Write a one page book report answering the following questions:
    • How does Daniel feel about his father at the beginning of the book?
    • How does he feel when his father doesn’t come home?
    • How does he feel by the end of the book?

4th Grade –
Required Classroom Project: Letter Mural Project
Create a mural with your students made out of any/all things to do with the handwritten letter.
Students can bring in letters written to and from family members, envelopes, writing utensils, pictures
that depict handwritten letters, etc. Work as a team to create and develop the mural discussing the
importance of each contribution as it is added to the project.
5th Grade -
Required Project:
Find and read a letter written by someone you consider famous. Write (1) page about how you felt
as you read the letter.

Some questions for students to consider while doing this assignment:
    • What is the tone of the letter you chose? (How did the writer sound as he or she was writing it?)
    • What do you think the writer was trying to express?
    • Do you think the writer of the letter is more important than his or her words, or is it their words
         which create their importance?

What Are Friends For?
Idea: Have students write a letter to their best friend describing their neighborhood and what they

         would like to see changed, then exchange letters and read each other’s aloud.

    • Ask students to express how they believe these changes will better their neighborhood and
         consider. Are their proposed changes urgent, or can they be conducted over a designated time
         period?

Purpose: To build confidence in student writing ability, promote group interaction, and foster
           respect of their peers thoughts and feelings.
