Non Stop Relay Speech – Talkathon 2019

Mohan to Mahatma – Walk with Gandhi

                Introduction :

On the 2nd of October 2019, it has been 150 years since the birth of Mahatma Gandhi. To
mark this century and half – Vivek Education Society (VES) organized a Non Sop Relay
Speech – Talkathon 2019, to utilize the occasion in a more constructive, innovative and in
pioneering spirit - one of a kind initiative in which 150 students spoke about Gandhiji and
his ideology and how they are pertinent and relevant in this day and age too. The talkathon
was dedicated to Vivek Alumni Late Captain R. Subramanian (Kirti Chakra –
posthumous) who was attached to the No. 1 Para special forces of the Indian Army.

               Need and importance:

The teachings of Mahatma Gandhi are famous worldwide and they revolve around the
concepts of Ahimsa (non-violence), Satyagraha (truth) and self-reliance. Gandhiji was an
epitome of integrity. Today when the problems in society have assumed larger
dimensions, there is all the more need to introduce Gandhian philosophy to children at a
very young age. After all, principles of Mahatma Gandhi are valid and eternal. The
Talkathon was conceived with the following objectives:

 To instill Gandhian values and principles (Ahimsa (non-violence), Satyagraha

                       (truth) and self-reliance.
 To inspire children to turn into better individuals.
 To believe in oneself and with conviction.
 To give equal importance and to respect all languages.
 To develop oratory skills and to develop leadership qualities.
 To develop interest in learning a new language (which includes foreign as well as

                       supposedly ‘dead language’ like Sanskrit)
 To give a greater insight into Gandhian ideologies and its applications for the
                       benefit of all mankind.
 To infuse a new interest among the students by bringing in an element of unity
and brotherhood and rewarding them for their success.

               Planning :

Planning for the event included figuring out goals and timeline for the event, establishing
budget, to find a suitable venue, technology to be used, find sponsors and build team for
               campaigning.

A core committee was set up by the Principal Dr. Suresh Nair in the mid of August (15th
August to be precise) which included teachers from all sections – Pre-Primary, Primary,
Secondary, Junior College and Degree College.

The goals and timeline for the event was discussed. It was decided to organize the event
               in the school premises.
