In 2023, there was a significant disruption to the
film and television industry due to a widespread
writers’ strike. The Writers Guild of America (WGA)
went on strike in response to what it considered
inadequate residuals, credits, and health care. This
ongoing strike was the longest in history, lasting
WRITERS The writers’ conflict had been simmering for years,
from March 13th to June 27th.
but the tipping point came in January with the
STRIKE WGA’s announcement of its intention to launch a
strike. In the weeks prior to the strike, the WGA
and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television
Producers (AMPTP) disagreed on how streaming
and new media residual payments should be
calculated. This disagreement resulted in the
WGA’s decision to call a strike, and they were
backed by their showrunners who feared they
would not be able to continue working if they sided
with the AMPTP.
The immediate impact of the WGA strike was the
cancellation of many television shows. In addition,
high-profile films such as The Big Lebowski 2 and
the 24th James Bond film had to be delayed.
Furthermore, the WGA strike caused months of
disruption for the industry, with many films, pilots,
