Eli and Fur
A screen displayed the artist’s name, cycling through largely
static visuals, with lights occasionally lending effects. Less a
massive production, and more of a party scene meant to be
enjoyed amongst the company of friends. Many of those who
had come out to celebrate tonight had done so in groups, and
the music was merely a backing track to their occasion and
conversating. The opening acts of Tash and RJ Pickens laid the
groundwork for everything that followed. They provided house
rhythms and melodies through which people could mingle and
casually vibe. Cool. Also, I appreciated the camaraderie
present between the performers. As they switched places,
subtly exchanging styles and catalogs of music, they
embraced each other with kindness and warmth. Smiles all
around, taking photos to commemorate the occasion, and
pretty much laying down a pleasant atmosphere for all to be
part of. I appreciate artists getting on well with each other, as
they are the point of origin from which entertainment and
mood expands forth in the club.
By the time Eli and Fur took the stage, PRYSM had nearly filled.
Space to move was limited, and even the second room was
overflowing. If you hadn’t staked out a position to catch the
action before now, well, shoot, your kind of out of luck, unless
you’ve got some charm and personality to woo your way into a
tabled group. Eli and Fur do, and they began to showcase
much of what makes their style and sound unique through
house and deep house cuts. They’re into it, practiced and
original, and as I gaze down from the second-floor balcony, I
can hear bottles and shelves trembling from behind me at the
bar.
They would keep this energy and flare throughout their entire Photography: Tyler Fisk
performance, and the crowd about, above, and below all
received their selections and sequences eagerly. Eli and Fur
have accomplished much already throughout their career, but
if tonight was any indication, they are far from done. I expect
big things to come. When an artist releases a single,
especially one as insightful and honest as ‘Insomnia’, to me it’s
a harbinger of things to follow. I wouldn’t be surprised if a full-
fledged album is on the horizon. My experience witnessing Eli
and Fur was largely pleasant, although I will confess, I’m more
the type who finds themselves at home in a three-day-plus arts
and music festival. If you’d like to discover more information
