Q&A w/ Jayne Denham
"Moonshine" features tracks written by
esteemed songwriters such as Miranda
Lambert, Brandy Clark, Shane McAnally, and
Jon Randall. How did you go about selecting
songs for this album, and what was it like
working with these talented artists?
{Jayne Denham} Creating an album with a
specific theme in mind means the songs have to
fit the movie that we want you to play in your
head as you listen to each track along the
journey. This creates a very specific target, so it
is kind of hard yet easy to find the songs that say
what this album's message is.
So my team reached out to Nashville publishers
to see if they had any songs that were along the
lines of rebellion, outlaw, and fit a Moonshine
runners-themed album. Then, out of the blue,
songs were offered to me by some of my
songwriting heroes, like Brandy, Miranda, Shane,
and Jon, and the publishers totally got it, and we
found the perfect songs. So although I did not sit
with them in the room for the writing, I am
honored to have been gifted the songs to cut.
Let's face it, a good song is a good song, no
matter who wrote it.
I also got busy writing with friends and have three on the album, but my favorite song to write was
‘Moonshine Money." I wrote that with Matt Scullion and Ross Flora. Ross grew up in Franklin County,
Virginia, so he knows so much about the history and stories of moonshine runners and moonshiners
(he may have shared a secret or two), so it was fun to write a song with someone who had such
knowledge, and so the tail of Uncle Jimmy and his moonshine money was born.
