To become a medium requires different attributes including integrity, patience and morality. But more importantly it requires compassion.
However, not all mediums are spiritual and one of the things that proves this is that they often have an ego that is far superior to their abilities. This is something definitely to
guard against as it not only brings the industry into disrepute but also your own abilities.
So ... What is a Medium?
Mediums are people who have a gift that allows the spirit people to give messages from the afterlife. The medium is the link between the two worlds communicating with people who have passed over. The medium’s work is to prove that there is ‘life- after-death’ (or ‘life-after-life’ as it is sometimes refered to). This can be a great comfort to the bereaved and help them to come to terms with their loss.
The medium needs to give enough information to satisfy their sitter (the person receiving the reading) that the person they wish to hear from still survives after leaving the ‘earth plane’.
The evidence may include details such as a physical description of the deceased, the work they did, stories about their life on this plane and even what they died of. The evidence is wide and varies with person to person. It may even include things that are happening to the sitter currently that their loved one has seen, this is good evidence they are still around and is often very comforting.
Medium or Psychic
Basically the difference is that a ‘Medium’ deals or connects to the ‘Spirit World’ and a ‘Psychic’ connects to the person still on this plane. Whilst a Medium can connect in both manners, generally speaking a ‘Psychic’ doesn’t.
One of the rules in British Spiritualism is the medium is not allowed to make future predictions. The main reason for this is that we have free will and that we should take ‘personal responsibility’ for our future. And since using this free will can alter the future in a nano-second it would be wrong for a medium to give that type of information.
Basically everyone is psychic to some degree. We are all born with a natural intuitive or sixth sense. So often when you are learning to be a ‘medium’ you will find that your psychic powers will be the first ones to develop.
To become a good medium often requires years of practice, we have met many people who only after a few months think they are ready to call themselves ‘mediums’, but they are allowing their ego to take over.
What qualities are needed
It is important to have patience when developing your gifts and to remember it needs integrity, morality, compassion and a good hold on your ego. Enjoy your path, learn and grow slowly is far better than rushing and failing.
Use your own experiences to help develop your empathy with others. With these skills and your natural gift then, with time and
practice you could become a brilliant medium. Remember sometimes you will seem to come on in leaps and bounds, other times you might feel that it is hard work and maybe even impossible. Don’t give up hope, with perseverance and support you will get there.
Faith and confidence in your abilities is important to the success of your mediumship, but unfortunately, as often is the case, self- confidence can turn to arrogance which has the disastrous result of instead of receiving praise and admiration of others the person will only receive our scorn. These are clearly not the qualities you would expect to find in a medium and yet it is an endemic problem.
Can becoming a medium
make you arrogant
To prevent an arrogant lopsided approach to becoming a medium temper your self-confidence with modesty. Do this right from the start then your mediumship will grow to become both accurate and spiritual.
Too many fall to what in Greek Tragedy is called the hubris, that is overbearing pride, presumption and arrogance that eventually results in disastrous situations.
It is always good to remember that you, as a medium, will only be as good at your last reading. I know of some very well known mediums that I have witnessed being absolutely fantastic, yet on other occasions couldn’t get a message correct. So remember it happens to the best!
Confidence & Humour
There is no problem with you telling people how brilliant you are, as long as you are joking, in reality stay humble. Let the sitter decide how good you are.
Remember self-righteous modesty is also arrogance. Have fun and joke about your gift but deep down be humble. Take yourself too seriously and you are lost.
If you appear overly confident people will praise you, idealize you even because that is what you will expect of them, but if you allow your ego to get the better of you it is possible for spirit to take your gift away - and they will.
Please remember that we are the servants. We work for spirit, not the other way round. It is our honor to do this work. It is we who should be grateful.
Finally, good luck with your spiritual path, I am sure that given the right
help and support you will be amazing. 35
