The bed—once reserved for sex, sleep, and folding laundry—has become a workplace. Even before the COVID crisis, many people were spending multiple hours a day work- ing from their beds. According to Beatriz Colomina, the bed is a slice of “horizontal architecture,” and it is often the largest open area in a tight living space. Today’s bed is a place to plug in and power up— before passing out from exhaustion.
Despite its drawbacks, working from bed with proper pillow support may be safer for your neck and back than hunching over a laptop at a kitchen table. The laptop should be elevated on some kind of tray, however, and you will want to move around frequent- ly rather than putting in an eight-hour day in one position. An ideal work-from-home situation includes a variety of places to work (and a three-story slide).
