Hello colleagues!
I’ve been at [Your Workplace] for a bit now, and I wanted to send out an e-mail to sort of come out and voice that I identify with they/them pronouns and would like to be referred to with they/them pronouns.
[Your Workplace], like most companies, doesn’t make it standard practice for people to share their pronouns when you first meet them. People- centric corporations have a duty to make it standard and mandatory to provide a safe outlet for every employee to communicate their pronouns, for all queer, trans, gender-neutral, gender-nonconforming, nonbinary, and gender-variant folks.
A good way to start is by including your pronouns in Slack descriptions, Twitter bios, and e-mail signatures. It should be standard practice for everyone to share their pronouns when introducing themselves. If every employee at [Your Workplace] began sharing their pronouns, we would all be helping create a comfortable and safe space for queer and trans folks.
I’ve seen this successfully done at colleges that actively discuss topics of race, gender, and gender identity. Many colleges have made it standard for every faculty member to voice their pronouns when they first introduce themselves and to include their pronouns wherever they have their titles, like in their e-mail signatures. Faculty set the standard for their students to follow, and it’s become commonplace for students to share their pronouns when meeting for the first time.
