Strategy 7            As a Trainer, it is your responsibility to minimise this behaviour as
                             quickly as possible while maintaining this person’s self-esteem.


                             Possible strategies include:


                               1. Give this person a chance to shine; then redirect the discussion
                                  to the rest of the group (“Thanks for that, Charlie. Does anyone
                                  else have any thoughts about this?”).


                               2. Find ways to re-channel Charlie’s energy, for example, ask him to
                                  note group contributions on a flip chart.


                               3. If the above fails, you may need to speak with Charlie privately.
                                  Let him know that you value his contribution; however, it
                                  is important everyone in the group has the opportunity to

                                  contribute.


        Strategy 8               z To help build their confidence, gently draw them into activities and

                                discussions.  Ask them a question that you feel they will know the
                                answer to.


                                 z Deal with any contributions they make positively. Consider
                                assigning this person a specific task that you know they will be
                                comfortable with.
