Ian Porterfield’s Funeral
Nigel Porterhouse. That was the name Sammy, an ageing workmate of my Dad’s, gave to our F.A. Cup Final matchwinner and I also occasionally heard him called Goldenboot in a derisory manner when a pass of his went astray but in the last week Ian Porterfield has been very much in the thoughts of Sunderland fans all over the world because of his sad and early death at the age of sixty-one. Probably like many I was surprised to learn that Ian had been based in Bagshot, Surrey and as I live in London and had a week off work I thought I’d attend his funeral service there.
