After we’d won the Cup expectations were of course very high and many people thought that we’d get promoted the following season but instead we became the team everyone wanted to beat. I was standing in the Roker End at the first match of the season, a dour 1-1 home draw against Orient on a gloomy day, and it was a sad portent. While our league form was disappointing we managed to win a few games in the European Cup-Winners Cup against Vasas Budapest and Sporting Lisbon as well as a League Cup tie
