against Derby and those games rekindled the F.A. Cup magic from earlier in the year.
During my Christmas 1973 holiday from university I remember being in the Clock Stand and rather prematurely lighting up a cigar as we went into the lead against West Brom but we were pegged back to 1-1. I was there again on New Year’s Day 1974 but we lost 2-1 to Notts County. An old schoolmate called Arth was now a regular member of our group at the games as well as Anth, Keith and Col. I came up for the weekend and took in the home derby (yes, I always called it a derby back then) against Boro on 2nd March but we lost 2-0 and both Bobby Kerr and Dennis Tueart were sent off. Not long afterwards Tueart was off for good, to Manchester City along with Micky Horswill and they were the first of the Cup-winning side to leave though Richie Pitt had received a career-ending injury in that first game against Orient. That Easter I went to two home matches on consecutive days against Carlisle and Bristol City and my diary tells me that the results ranged from an ‘epic victory’ of 2-1 to me feeling ‘ultra disappointed”at 1-2. It’s hard to imagine playing two games in a row like that these days. We ended up finishing sixth that season.
I mentioned earlier that the scarf Mick gave me after we were relegated against Liverpool in 1970 got me into trouble later on. It happened before a pre-season Texaco Cup match against Middlesborough in August 1974. I was wearing it as Anth and I waited outside the station for Col.
