118 Gowie Finally gowie (meaning chewing gum) is very much a Sunderland, Penshaw and Shiney Row thing (see Figure 7). While chewie was more popular everywhere, it was most likely to be recognised in these parts of Wearside. Putting these results together shows that gowie has a particular overlap with chattie.
