Some top hits were Dandilon and burdock, sarsaparilla, American Cream Soda and ginger beer.Villa pop was set up by Thomas Fenwick in Roker Avenue in 1885 and the business carried the name of its owner. The growing demand for carbonated drinks led to its expansion, and Fenwick moved it into an old bakery in the grounds of his family home, which was a Victorian %u2018villa%u2019. This inspired the name change to Villa Drinks.In 1920 the company swapped horse and cart for the motorised age when it bought its first van, something that would subsequently become a common sight on the streets of Sunderland. Continued expansion under the desendants of Thomas (it remained a family business for a number of generations) meant the company swapped the north of the watter for the south, moving to a Villa And Sykes PopThe %u2018icey%u2019 wasn%u2019t the only person that used to do the rounds across the streets of Wearside. As was the case elsewhere in the country, a whole array of sales people would sell all manner of things door to door, a common practice before the rise of supermarkets.
