FUNKE AND THE TWO TONE BABY
AT LITTLE BUILDINGS, NEWCASTLE
Brace yourselves for the one-man sonic explosion that is Funke and The Two Tone Baby as he lands at Little Buildings in Newcastle on Saturday 22nd October. Bringing together guitars, harmonica, beatboxing and effects, there is a seamless collision of organic and mechanical elements within Funke’s work that helps to create a sound that is fresh and filled with unstoppable rhythms and an unrelenting melody. Funke’s sound is uncategorised, uncharted and filled with frenzied alt- blues elements and metronomic dance beats. Support on the night comes from alternative folk artist, Gaz Brookfield. TWISTERELLA
AT VARIOUS VENUES, MIDDLESBROUGH
Back for its eighth year, Teesside's multi-venue all-day festival, Twisterella, returns on Saturday 8th October with another jam-packed line-up showcasing some of the best up-and-coming names in the regional and national circuit. A glance at the press coverage from national outlets provides plenty to back up the hype surrounding the festival, with the likes of BBC 6 Music's Vic Galloway previously praising Twisterella for successfully "[inspiring] a corner of gritty, working-class Teesside with an air of escapism and rock ‘n’ roll fun." There's almost a sense of shock and surprise as to how good Twisterella is to the outsider. However, to many of us who have been around the block of where the roads Albert and Linthorpe meet over the years, it comes as no surprise at all, with Twisterella continuing a long-held tradition of Middlesbrough providing a haven for cutting-edge bands across the musical spectrum for many years, be it through the work of promoters like Twisterella's own Henry Carden, the multitude of DIY gigs taking place on a weekly basis, or indeed a look at the previous line-ups of the much-loved and equally missed Music Live, known for introducing the town to the likes of Arctic Monkeys long before they were headlining Leeds Festival. Twisterella is about as Boro as it comes for a music festival, with a real mix of sounds and genres, accessible to all, firmly rooted in a DIY ethic and ultimately amazing value at only £20.00 a ticket. Promising to be bigger than ever this year following the success of its first summer showcase "Class of 22" event in August, stages this year will be at Teesside Uni's Student Union, The Westgarth Social Club, The Townhouse, TSOne and various pop-up events across the town. Headliners, Benefits, have taken the country by storm this year, and a headline slot seems a fitting homecoming for a band that will only go on to greater things as they share the billing with much-hyped Wrexham-based indie band, The Royston Club. Local rockers Onlooker have released what is one of the best LPs of the year in ‘Total Rest’. Two-piece punk favourites Voodoo Radio return to Middlesbrough after several eye-catching performances at The Westgarth, and Sunderland's Pit Pony make a foray to the south of the region having conquered further north.
