LET'S EAT GRANDMA
AT THE CLUNY, NEWCASTLE
Let's Eat Grandma are probably the best band named after a punctuation joke. The Norwich-based duo, made up of Jenny Hollingworth and Rosa Walton, are a psych-pop band that offers balms for the soul in the form of bubblegum pop. Their latest album, ‘Two Ribbons’, is an eccentric culmination of synth-driven pop sounds already explored on their prior album, ‘I'm All Ears’, but this time, with more organic instrumentation. The result is an album that stands out in today's over-saturated market by fusing classic and modern elements into a timeless pop sound. Let’s Eat Grandma will perform at The Cluny, Newcastle on Thursday 13th October. JACK DODSWORTH

THE MAGPIES
AT THE GLOBE, NEWCASTLE
The all-female trio The Magpies, made up of accomplished musicians who, alone, are superb, but together, create something superbly special, will make their way to the renowned The Globe in Newcastle later this month. Bringing their talents to the group are Celtic Connections Danny Kyle Award-Winning guitarist, banjo player and vocalist, Bella Gaffney; claw hammer banjo player and vocalist, Kate Griffin; and acclaimed fiddle player and tunesmith, Holly Brandon, whose talents are combined to create The Magpies’ unique transatlantic folk sound. These performers are certainly flying high when it comes to their career, and wherever they play, they knock it out of the park. The outfit have made a huge impact on the folk world with their fresh take on the transatlantic neo-folk sound they have become known for. Definite festival favourites, the group have played at the likes of Glastonbury Festival, Cambridge Folk Festival, Larmer Tree Festival, Shambala Festival, Towersey Festival, and Deer Shed Festival, with each performance cementing their musical fame and expanding their fan base. But their fame surpasses the UK and the festival scene, as they have also played a number of international shows in the likes of Canada, Portugal, and Ireland. Having only released their debut album ‘Tidings’ back in June 2020, their career has been flourishing ever since, with the album receiving critical acclaim from the likes of The Sunday Times, The Daily Mail, and BBC Radio 2. Since then, there have been a string of single releases from the trio including their newest single ‘Galileo’ which follows on with the theme of bringing a contemporary and fresh feminist voice to the current musical stratosphere. With a new album release on the horizon this autumn, The Magpies are heading out on tour across the UK. On Thursday 20th October, that tour heads to The Globe in Newcastle where audiences can expect sonic storytelling, a high-drama performance and a good old-fashioned folk-style hoedown. If you’re a fan of Bluegrass style Celtic folk or if you’re looking for something new, then this is the show that you want to be at as avid music lovers are sure to be flocking to the venue.
