THE CORAL
AT PRINCESS ALEXANDRA AUDITORIUM, YARM
In 2002, there wasn’t a corner of the British music scene you could hide without hearing the seismic hit, ‘Dreaming of You.’ The Coral bolted out of the gates and made themselves known in a way very few bands have done since. The band delivered something refreshing, something charming and something very fun. This something has a larger spread than just their hit single, as this something spread across the entirety of their debut album, garnering attention from critics and consumers alike. From the second the record sparks into action, there is something alluring, unique and uncharted. ‘Spanish Main’, the album’s daring opener, sets a precedent of bombastic, theatrical and completely immersive musicianship, with an energy that completely contrasts the following track, ‘I Remember When’. The sounds on the eponymous release are completely unparalleled when compared to its competitors, and even now, the sound, energy and macabre sense of humour echo distinctly throughout the indie music circuit, making this a real landmark album for the genre. 20 years later, through a myriad of reincarnations, reimaginations and transformations, the British indie scene still can’t hide the undoubtable force of The Coral’s debut. The infectious, swaggering grooves, the hazy guitars meandering across the tracks and the choral choruses are still found cropping up again and again in every direction. It is with this in mind that James Skelly, the band’s songwriter and frontman, has embarked on an intimate, colloquial tour, taking Q&As from the audience and walking them through the process and the mindset of one of Britain’s biggest ‘00s hits. Joined by keyboardist Nick Power, the night will, of course, feature a plethora of their hits, performed with a minimalist, stripped-back appeal, interspersing the conversations and questions. For any fans of The Coral or the indie scene, this candid night of music will provide a beautiful nostalgia hit that supplies a new wave of understanding behind the making of a groundbreaking debut record. As the self-titled release explored mystery, romance, adventure and psychedelia, the romp into madness captured something genuine and excitingly palpable, which translates live beautifully. Arriving at the Princess Alexandra Auditorium in Yarm on Friday 21st October, The Coral are offering a night like no other Coral experience. CAMERON WRIGHT
