The State of Michigan in the American Midwest is known
as The Great Lakes State, the principal airport is Detroit Wayne County International Airport.
Scottish and North of England travellers are spoiled for choice, with several daily direct flights via London. However, one stop access from Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh are also options via
the other Great Lakes principal hubs, Minneapolis St Paul and Chicago.
With a brand new flight introduced by Icelandair from Reykjavik to Detroit, the opportunity to travel via Iceland is also an attractive one.
Consisting of two large peninsulas known as the Upper and Lower Peninsula respectively, on land
it borders the US States of Ohio, Wisconsin and Indiana and shares a water border with Illinois and Minnesota. Detroit, Port Huron and Sault Ste Marie have bridges that cross into Canada.
With the longest freshwater coastline in the United States, pristine beaches, lakes that feel like oceans, glorious sunrises and sunsets, for travellers who want to experience the best
of the outdoors, the snow-capped peaks, fresh powder, water sports and abundance of natural wilderness, Michigan will be a revelation.
The state is home to six national parks sites, which include the renowned Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore which towers over the blue waters of Lake Michigan. The skies, free of light pollution, also make it the perfect place to observe night-time skies scattered with stars and daytime skies that are the deepest blue.
Iconic cities, open roads and picturesque towns, Michigan is blessed with attractions that provide visitors with a taste of what might be called “The Real America” and if taste is high on the agenda, the food and drink on offer is of the highest quality. Michigan prides itself on its locally sourced produce, with a strong farm to
fork culture.
The home of Motown, Detroit continues to attract music enthusiasts to the world famous Hitsville USA recording studios, where it all began. This vibrant city has regained its former place in the top 5 places to visit in the US, home to attractions such

This 12-acre site is more than just a car museum, it is an indoor/outdoor educational experience with its collection of cars, objects and houses, documenting life in early America.
You can visit the Wright Brothers bicycle shop, Thomas Edison’s laboratory and the very bus that Rosa Parks sat in when making her protest.
Detroit also has one of the largest theatre districts in the US outside Broadway and is home to major baseball, football and hockey teams.
The Upper Peninsula is popular all year round but this heavily forested area with mountains in the west has world class winter sports and is the birthplace of snowboarding.
The Lower Peninsula has a myriad of unique towns and open roads. Bridging the two is the astonishing Mackinac Island, where life moves slowly, the good folks of the island know how to reduce blood pressure having removed mechanised transport from the Island in 1901. Visitors can relax on what is reputedly the longest wooden porch in the world while sipping cocktails and watching the sun go down over the Straits of Mackinac.
The list is endless with places like Traverse City, with its amazing
