You can measure the amount of non-generative language and generative language.c) Take a language sample in a situation which may be representative of the child/young person%u2019s ordinary communication.d) The length of the language sample is up to your discretion and determined by available recordings.e) Results can be subjective. There is no right or wrong analysis as this is not a standardised assessment.f) You need to be consistent with your approach to scoring.%u2022 Count each repetition as one utterance%u2022 Physical gestalts noted separately%u2022 It is OK to mark as unknown where it is unclear if generated, including if a single word is Stage 1 or Stage 3GLP Pathway StagesUse as a screen by highlighting using the colour coding and/or using percentage scores. The observation tool can help assess/analyse and monitor. You can have language at different stages so results can be e.g. Stage 1-2 or 2-3. If inconclusive, you can report information about the amount of non-generative/generative language.Stage 1 Non-generative language.Immediate echolalia and Delayedecholalia. Delayed echolalia =gestalt. A gestalt can be single word. For example, %u2018Be careful it might pinch%u2019 means %u2018crab.%u2019 The meaning does not map directly onto the meaning of the word/s. These are not linguistically generated phrases.Stage 2 Non-generated language.Partial gestalts.Gestalts are split into smaller chunks. They may be combined with anotherpart of a split gestalt. For example, %u2018It might pinch%u2019 (from %u2018be careful it might pinch%u2019) + %u2018Let%u2019s see%u2019 (from %u2018let%u2019s see what we can find%u2019 meaning %u2018looking for something%u2019) = %u2018Let%u2019s see it might pinch%u2019 meaning %u2018let%u2019s look for a crab.%u2019Stage 3 Beginning to self-generate language. They are recognising words as units of language. For example, %u2018crab.%u2019May appear to have shorter utterances or be used with a split gestalt, for example, %u2018Let%u2019s see crab.%u2019Stage 4 Self-generated language. They are using original phrases and short sentences with grammar andintonation.Intonation is more spontaneous.Language is novel. %u2018Wow, catched a crab.%u2019May see grammar errors.Stage 5 Self-generated language.More complex grammar is used.%u2018Wow I caught a big crab.%u2019Stage 6 Self-generated language.Complete grammar is used.%u2018Wow! Although this was my first time crabbing, I caught such a huge crab.%u2019Non-generative GenerativeTransitional
