Stage 1: Choose your breathable felt underlay
This allows condensation to escape from the main roof as it’s breathable, whilst still providing a water-proof secondary level of protection if the roof or tiling ever failed.
                                                                                                                                                                                          90g budget breathable felt underlay

Permo Extreme is a tear-resistant roof underlay designed for use on low pitched roofs, down to a minimum roof pitch of 12.5° for interlocking tiles, 15° for slates and 22.5° for plain tiles. This makes Permo Extreme roof membrane the perfect solution for extensions and lean-tos, particularly as the roll is available in a half-size for smaller projects. The membrane is fleece lined to control condensation, whilst it’s fitted with self-adhesive tape, which provides a permanent seal of overlaps and immediate weatherproofing protection against wind, rain and snow. Permo Extreme is also highly temperature resistant from -40°C to +100°C
Stage 2: Choose your timber batons
25mm x 25mm (1 inch x 1 inch) non-pressure treated, raw timber.
Stage 3: Choose your tile or slate
It’s essential to choose the correct timber for your new roof. Upgrading timbers will create great strength and durability for years to come. Choosing the wrong timber can be in breach of building regulations.
     Banned by building control
You must now choose your roof covering type and whether this is to be a tile or a slate. Your local area conservation, or roof strength will often dictate this choice.
There are many different tiles or slates to choose from, with varying costs and estimated life expectancies.
Here are some of the popular choices:
38mm x 25mm (1.5 inch x 1 inch) Pressure treated, used on all rosemary or plain tiled r roofs only.
Imported from Latvia or Sweden to reduce knots
50mm x 25mm (2 inch x 1 inch). Pressure treated in choice of colours. Heavy Grade-A timber conforms to BS 5534.
