 Spanish Slate
A Spanish Slate Findley roof. Mr and Mrs Hall, Washington, Tyne & Wear
The real attraction of a slate roof is its strength, fire resistance, energy efficiency and durability. Natural slate can last a lifetime - often with little or no maintenance. Natural slate is
one of the cleanest and most environmentally friendly materials available and has the lowest carbon footprint of any pitched roof covering.
Environmental considerations
Climate Change
A slate roof (100m2) impacts the environment almost three times less than a fibre cement roof.
Fossil Fuel Depletion
A fibre cement roof (100m2) needs almost two times more energy than a slate roof.

Since the closure of many of the UK slate mines, northwestern Spain has provided top quality slate to Findley’s for the past 20 years. So much so, that it now dominates the UK market. There are 3 grades of slate: low, medium and best. Some of the new Chinese slate which is being imported to the UK constitutes much of the low and medium ranges. Findley’s only recommends and imports the finest, best grade Spanish Slate with a thickness
of 5-7mm.
Traditional slate roofs are designed to last in excess of 100 years, making this a lifetime choice of roof covering. Its sleek design and natural appearance mean that this is a timeless product but, being natural, has less impact on the environment.
Most natural slates nowadays are available in 2 sizes- a 16x10” and a 20x10”. Your roofing estimator will be able to decide which size is best for your home. Slate can be used comfortably from 200 to 350 pitches, depending on headlap.
Workmanship:
Findley’s have worked for many years alongside what are known in the industry as "Master Slaters". Many of these worked for companies by the names of Malone's and Matthew Charlton's. When these companies closed, Findley’s took on many of their staff. Today, at Findley's we have 78 staff of which only five are "Master Slaters". Talk to your roofing estimator about the availability of having these men on your site.
