                                LOANWATCH
As we’re approaching the January Window, we thought we’d take a look at the players we currently have out on loan. Carl Winchester and Jack Diamond are playing their football in League One at Shrewsbury and Lincoln respectively...
After making 45 appearances and playing a crucial role in our promotion to the Champion- ship last season, some were surprised to see the versatile Carl Winchester loaned to League One outfit Shrewsbury Town. We caught up with Ollie Warmer from Shrewsbury Town’s #1 Podcast, Salopcast, to ask how the 29-year-old was getting on...
SOLID
Winchester has been a very solid addition; he joins a small squad of hardworking professional players. Overall, he has been good without standing out. However, he is a very dependable player and a good upgrade in central midfield for Shrewsbury. He has played wing back, but mostly used as a right sided central midfielder in a 3-4-1-2. Salop mostly play counter attacking football, going fairly direct, so it is a challenge for a midfielder to really dominate the game. Winchester is a good L1 box to box midfielder, as you know, he has a good engine, he is hardworking and committed. In comparison with our other midfielders Winchester wins more of
his tackles and is more accurate with his passing than many of his colleagues and is one of those players who often goes under the radar, the kind of player you miss when he isn’t in the team, because he is so effective. I have been impressed with Winchester and he is another good signing by Cotterill. He made his debut away at Forest Green Rovers, he was about five metres behind a FGR player, but flew past him. This obviously surprised and amused Winchester, he couldn’t help but smile at the Shrews fans as he legged it down the left wing. It was a very funny moment and gave us a glimpse into his character.
PERMANENT DEAL?
If we could get him on a free, I would certainly want the club to sign Winchester. I wouldn’t want us to spend money on a 29-year-old, which might be an issue for Sunderland as they have one year left on his deal after this season. But if Sunderland want to get into the Championship playoffs, I’d ex- pect them to play/sign players of a higher calibre, which is probably why he has ended up on loan at a mid-table League One side, I guess.
