LEE HOWEY, LEE HOWEY, LEE HOWEY
During the World Cup we caught up with Lee Howey for a coffee, a chat about the state of the club he loves, and we managed to avoid talking about his brother...
How do you feel the season’s gone so far?
In terms of the start, I’m pleasantly surprised. We got through the back door in terms of how we got promoted, through
the play-offs, and you wonder if we’ve got the quality to compete in the Championship. As fans, it was just important to survive and I don’t think any of us had great hopes of storming the division, and the pre-season didn’t show much promise, but you can’t tell much from pre-season because it’s all about fitness and trying lads out in new positions.
Then in the first game, I thought we kept the ball well, we passed well, we attacked with pace and quality, and for the
first time in many years I’m really looking forward to going to watch them. I’ve seen some of the comments when we’ve got beat, but you have to remember this
is a very young team, and they’re going to be erratic, with some good performances and some not so good. I’m very confident we’ll survive comfortably and once we get back after the World Cup, Ross will be back. Before they got injured, Ross and Simms were linking up really nicely, and they looked dangerous, a proper handful. With Clarke and Roberts coming in from either side, that’s a decent combination for me.
